Does it work?

Azithromycin is such an effective chlamydia treatment that you do not need to have a follow up test to make sure it has worked.

How long does it take to work?

Your chlamydia should be gone within a week. If your symptoms persist you need to test again.

When can I have sex again?

Side-effects of chlamydia tablets

Alternatives to Azithromycin

There is another antibiotic medication which treats chlamydia called doxycycline. Unlike azithromycin, this needs to be taken in two doses every day for seven days to clear chlamydia.

Reducing the risk of passing on chlamydia

It is important to refrain from having sexual intercourse for seven days after treatment with azithromycin. You should also contact anyone who you have had sexual intercourse with in the past 3 months, so that they can also be treated. If you do not do this you are at risk of getting the infection again.
